The Nature and Art of Workmanship

On Tuesday, June 30, 2009 0 comments
Writing about Steve McCurry's new book The Unguarded Moment the other day and thinking about how well it "goes with" his earlier book Looking East reminded me that for some while now I've been meaning to write a post about books in pairs. I have a quirky tendency to shelve books next to other books that I sense they fit with. Sontag sits next to Barthes, Tom Wolfe's The Painted Word is shelved next to John Berger's Ways of Seeing. Why? I guess sometimes the pairings are obvious; sometimes

Drew hired me just before their move. She wanted me to come over and capture them in their first home before everything changed. We had a rocky start, having to reschedule several times due to heat, face scrapes, and pink eye. Time was marching on, closer and closer to their move date we crept. We started joking that the shoot was cursed and the day that it finally worked out, she warned me to be careful on my way over because neither of us would be surprised if I suddenly got a flat tire. Than

Today's taste of Sweden

On Tuesday, June 30, 2009 0 comments
Jane Hamsher and I just went to watch Huff Post editor (and friend) Katharine Zaleski talk at the Swedish political conference we've been invited to attend this week. The moderator was from a conservative paper, and had a bit of an issue with HuffPo being liberal. She also didn't understand why the American press focused on Obama's dog, as if this were a sign of the press' liberal bias. (They focused on Bush's dog too.) Anyway, our panel is on Thursday, but we're also going to be meeting up

More from the GORGEOUS wedding of Kate and Justin! Thanks again to Arden Photography for submitting this to us. Happy Monday y'all! What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The distance. I live in Birmingham and we were getting married at the church in Dothan, Alabama with the reception at my parents home. Were there any special family traditions you included in the wedding? We both grew up in the Methodist church, and really wanted to

Canon PowerShot D10 review

On Tuesday, June 30, 2009 0 comments
For the longest while, your options were highly limited in the waterproof / rugged point-and-shoot arena. In fact, it was arguably better to just buy a standard P&S camera and a waterproof casing for said camera than to worry over any of the standalone waterproof alternatives. When Canon introduced its PowerShot D10 earlier this year, we immediately noticed that this waterproof shooter was quite unlike the models before it. Outside of a somewhat bulbous casing, it didn't look drastically

Kodak's already taken some steps to cut down on counterfeiting of its batteries, and it looks like Panasonic is now taking some fairly drastic measures of it own, which could leave some users of its cameras a tad unhappy.
