How would you change Pentax's K-7 DSLR?

On Monday, August 31, 2009
Pentax may not be the first name you think of when scouting a new DSLR, but it's certainly closer to the top now than it was prior to the K-7's release . The semi-pro cam saw positive review after positive review flow in, giving even the Nikon and Canon faithful reason to pay attention. At right under $1,300 for just the body it didn't come cheap, though the high-def movie capture mode, ability to snap HDR shots natively and 14.6 megapixel sensor help to justify the MSRP somewhat. What we're

Bokode, a new barcode

On Monday, August 31, 2009
The MIT Camera Culture Group utilized Bokeh , an effect where the lens is purposely placed out of focus, in order to vastly improve current 2D barcode technology. Dubbed Bokode , the team claims that an off the shelf camera can read data 2.5 microns from a distance of over 4 meters, compared to today?s average barcode reader?s maximum distance of only a foot or so. Given the randomness of finding cabs in New York when you?re in a hurry, I arrived half an hour early at the Baryshnikov Arts Center last week to interview Mikhail Baryshnikov. When I emerged from the elevator, Baryshnikov was in the hall to meet me, greet me and shepherd me into a waiting conference room. Baryshnikov doesn?t like to waste time. On Saturday, August 29, 2009
By Leah Sandals, National Post This summer, two major galleries?the McMichael and the Art Gallery of Ontario?have been working like mad to promote their exhibitions on Canada?s First Nations artists. But some of the best local shows on this topic can actually be found in the small galleries of Harbourfront?s York Quay Centre. Here's the lowdown on the sleeper hits. 1. Keesic Douglas, Photo Gallery York Quay Centre, 235 Queens Quay W. In his exhibition ?flight to the moon,? Keesic Dou

" Men Who Stare at Goats ," the new George Clooney and Ewan McGregor film about psychic soldiers, kicked off a flurry of commentary on Twitter this week, and at least one producer out there loves Jeff Bridges ' role. There's been a lot of real-life drama sweeping through the Twitter-Wood feed as well this week, including Ted Kennedy 's death and memorial service and the wildfires in Los Angeles that have forced thousands of residents out of their upscale L.A. neighborhoods. How to Use Sunset Light to Light Portraits

On Friday, August 28, 2009
Sunset is arguably the most beautiful time of day for portrait light. But you don?t want to simply take your subject outside and start shooting. Take a few moments to identify ?how? to use your light and your portraits will be dreamy. Here are three ways you can use the light by setting your subject in relationship to the setting sun. 1. Front Light: Place your subject facing the light. Shoot facing your subject with your back to the light. The light will brightly illuminate your subject,

Unsettling Old Photos of the ?Living? Dead

On Friday, August 28, 2009
Some of you might remember a blog I did last year, Only the Creepiest Photos Ever Taken. It was a small collection of something I?d just discovered ? Victorian mourning photography, in which the dead are posed as if they were ?just sleeping? and photographed, creating an expensive memento mori that was often the only photograph a family would have of the deceased loved one. Well, I just found something creepier. A lot creepier. It?s a sub-genre of the Victorian mourning portrait, in

Jan von Hollenben?s Dreams of Flying

On Friday, August 28, 2009
Son of a cinematographer and a child therapist, Jan von Holleben must have been destined to create visually striking depictions of childhood fantasy. In his series Dreams of Flying , the photographer takes an old-fashioned approach to staging gravity-defying acrobatics. Hollenben?s work is Gondry-esque (though maybe it?s the Ghostbusters -esque picture leaving that impression) in its lo-fi sensibility, favoring D.I.Y. fun over glossy special effects trickery.
