Tim Bollinger: Between

On Thursday, October 29, 2009
Posted by Matt LambertHot off the festival circuit, Tim Bollinger of Via Grafik recently shared his latest short ?Between? with us. This dark, surreal piece travels through grounds and walls and into moments stuck in time. As Tim puts it, ?It?s a journey through worlds of the subconscious, allowing us to catch sinister glimpses of the human psyche?s ambivalence.?Despite the mix of techniques (stop-motion, still photos animation in 2.5D, 3D elements, etc) the film still possesses a consuming visc

Olympus PEN E-P1 Review

On Thursday, October 29, 2009
We knew it was coming but it still surprised many when Olympus threw away the last vestiges of a single lens reflex camera in a digital snapper that otherwise could have been called a DSLR. Into the new PEN went the 4/3rds inch Micro Four Thirds Live MOS sensor. Out went the mirror box. Onto it went a large 7.6cm LCD screen. No optical viewfinder and no onboard flash. Quite a revolution. You still get Program AE, shutter and aperture priority plus manual exposure modes, precise control o

We?ve had our share of vase concepts here on Yanko Design, and this is definitely one of them. It?s strikingly similar to a previous ?framed vase? design we published some months ago, but it?s unique in it?s shape and execution. The line holding the frame is a wire, the wire bone?s connected to the light bone, and the light shines on the plant. Super cute. Talk about useless crap. I mean, whoa I totally need this. I suppose if you were doing a short film about this gadget or the wonders of iPhone video, then it would maybe be cool? The whole point of shooting video on your phone is to not need something like this. Priced at $300 I would have trouble holding back malicious laughter if I saw some dude toting this thing around pretending to be professional. I beg to be proven otherwise as I am continuously amazed at consumerism. Do Not Shake Vase

On Wednesday, October 28, 2009
We?ve had our share of vase concepts here on Yanko Design, and this is definitely one of them. It?s strikingly similar to a previous ?framed vase? design we published some months ago, but it?s unique in it?s shape and execution. The line holding the frame is a wire, the wire bone?s connected to the light bone, and the light shines on the plant. Super cute. The frame of course uses the famous Polaroid photo ratio to replicate the famous instant-photo look. If you look around the internet

Click Click: 2009 Marine Corps Marathon

On Tuesday, October 27, 2009
Based on DCist photography contributor Brian Knight 's photographs, yesterday's Marine Corps Marathon was a passionate whirlwind of emotions: elation, sadness, struggle, and whimsy, all in a blur of movement and color. It's appropriate then, that such an exhausting event required an earlier-than-roosters wake-up call for our intrepid photographer -- of course, DCist managing and arts editor Heather Goss (who somehow escaped the reach of

So the official wedding pics of Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump are all over the internet . Boring, right? Yes. If you can make them better, we'll pay you. We asked for attendees of yesterday's nuptials to send us their own pics when we saw the New York Post 's exclusive wedding portrait this morning. After we saw the photos pop up on the websites for People , Star and PopSugar, we started making calls to find out how they got the pics, too. A phone chain commenced. First their

Fear of Photoshop? Try Lightroom for Free

On Tuesday, October 27, 2009
I have long suffered an ambition to gain a passable proficiency in Adobe Photoshop. It is, after all, the gold standard of image manipulation. But, for me, attempting anything beyond the basics triggers a blind panic and frantic Googling (sorry, Adobe). And I?m not alone.?I was frightened to death of Photoshop every time I opened it for the first two years,? said Tyler Stableford, a professional photographer who gave a brief demonstration of Adobe?s Lightroom photo-editing software on Wednesday.

Testing Nikon?s D3S Under the Big Top

On Tuesday, October 27, 2009
Last week Nikon took 17 journalists to a dress rehearsal of the Big Apple Circus and equipped us with the new D3S pro-level D.S.L.R. Our mission was to try out the new camera?s high-ISO capabilities under challenging and constantly changing light conditions. But there was more to the challenge than just unpredictable lighting. Being a circus, the subjects were constantly juggling, bouncing, rolling, flipping, and flying through the air, all at the greatest of speeds. It was no environment for a

I like technology, but one thing that I have never really understood is wanting to geotag photos that I take.
