Your photography challenge in the next week is to take and share an image in the theme of ‘Negative Space’.

Negative space is that space that is around the main subject in an image.

Often as photographers we spend a lot of time thinking about the subjects that we’re photographing – posing portrait subjects, positioning them in the shot, getting them exposed correctly etc. However the space around your main subject is just as important – in fact it can make or break your image.

Negative space can bring a sense of balance to your image, it can strengthen composition, it can help draw the eye to the subject and give it more power and it can add a lot of interest to your shot. I’ve included some examples above and below.

Want to Learn More about Negative Space?: Further Reading on Negative Space. You might also like to check out a previous forum assignment that we ran on Negative Space to get some inspiration from the many images submitted.

So this week your challenge is to take pictures and pay particular attention to the negative space in your shots.

Once you’ve taken your ‘Negative Space’ Images – choose your best 1-2, upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and either share a link to them or – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPNEGATIVESPACE to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.
